“I hate this part right here”: Embodied, subjective experiences of listening to aversive music

Although the majority of previous research on music-induced responses has focused pleasurable experiences and preferences, it is undeniable that music capable eliciting strong dislike aversion as well. To date, only limited been carried out to understand subjective experience listening aversive music. This qualitative study explored people’s negative associated with listening, aim what kinds emotions, affective states, physical are One hundred two participants provided free descriptions (1) musical features music; (2) sensations, thoughts mental imagery evoked by (3) typical contexts where heard; (4) similarities and/or differences between music-related in other contexts. We found characterized embodied experiences, perceived loss agency, violation identity, well social or moral attitudes values. Furthermore, “experiencer types” were identified: reflecting a attitude toward unpleasant music, more neutral attitude. Finally, we discuss theoretical implications our findings broader context emotion research.
